Shows We're Reviewing in August1-8-13

August is a little quiet because people are on holiday but don’t worry we’re still here and ready to see whatever shows are playing.

Review-Melbourne International Comedy Roadshow- Fringe Club24-7-13

As an Australian myself, I feel many Hong Kongers (locals and expats alike) think getting any five Aussies up on a stage is enough to inspire hysterical laughter in the room, thanks to our apparently hilarious accent. So even better if they’re funny, right? Right.

Parody or Copyright Violation?12-7-13

I get a lot of questions on our tumblr and twitter about copyright stuff. People just wanting to know simple things like can they cut lines from a script? (The basic answer - no.) Other questions I get lots of are: Can I film my show? (Only if it's in the public domain or you have permission from the copyright holder.) I only took one class in school that covered theatre law and my understanding of the laws is strictly from an American perspective but I've been happy to help people who have been stumped by the language in their contracts. If you don't understand something in the contract or know you're going to violate the agreement - don't sign it!

Review-Architecture in Motion-Diavolo Dance8-7-13

I was invited to see Architecture in Motion presented by award winning LA Dance Company, Diavolo Dance on Sunday. Boy, was I happy to have gotten a ticket to see this show. I had heard about Diavolo before and was a big fan of co-founder, Jaques Heim's work. But I was interested to see how a show that relied so heavily on large props/sets would transfer into a tour. As most people know tours are often scaled down.

Review-Les Illusions de L’Amour 27-6-13

It was a Wednesday night at “Bisous” and you could barely squeeze another person into the venue. The lights went down and we were greeted to the sound of “Disney”, as the show began with Marsha singing a few songs as Belle and Ariel (yes, I know my Disney!).

Preview-Duetto-Aurora Theatre25-6-13

Fans of Italian theatre in town should be pleased to hear that the Italian Chamber of Commerce’s annual production will be opening this week at the Fringe Club. Over the past four years the Chamber has been dedicated to promoting Italian culture in Hong Kong. They produced works by Pirandello, Dario Fo and an adaption of Filumena last year. This year’s play should be even more exciting for fans of local work as it’s a world premiere play by a local playwright.

Review-Interconnected & Intertwined-Part-OF Gallery22-6-13

It's nice to see the art world and the performing world of Hong Kong come together for an event. It's especially nice when it comes with a friendly atmosphere and a free price tag. I had never heard of the Part-OF Gallery before I had attended last night but it's really a hidden treasure. It has a great little performance space that is naturally created by a large outdoor staircase. It's nice to see someone using the natural architecture of HK as a platform for a performance.

Review-Shadowlands-Hong Kong Players30-5-13

I haven’t seen the movie and did not know the details of this true life tale – of how the man who magicked up Narnia found a special kind of love in later life with Joy Davidman, an American poet 17 years his junior, after she forced her way into his ivory towered world with her son Douglas in retreat from a failing marriage.
