HKELD's Editor Chosen to Cover Edinburgh Fringe31-3-16

Recently, our editor, Meaghan McGurgan was selected for an NIC (Network of Independent Critics) Fellowship to travel to the Edinburgh Fringe. She was selected out of hundreds of emerging art critics and was the only critic selected out of Asia. She will be traveling to Edinburgh to provide valuable feedback to the Fringe and be mentored by established arts critics.

Review- SmallWaR- Hong Kong Arts Festival6-3-16

Yesterday, I was privy to a piece of theatre that wasn't flashy or theatrical. Yes, it used modern technology to tell its story, but it did so without pretense or shock value. Valentijn Dhaenens' SmallWaR is a companion piece to his larger than life, BigMouth. SmallWaR is a subtle piece that talks about the everyday victims of war. A one man show is turned into a greek chorus through the use of video installations. Simplicity is often the sign of perfection and this is why SmallWaR was so effective in telling its tale of loss and the horrors of battle.

History of the Lion Dance9-2-16

The Lion dance is a Chinese tradition synonymous with Chinese New Year. We see it happen every year and it's a big source of charitable donations for schools, temples and other organizations. Most troupes charge 2,000HKD to come to your location to perform and also take lai see packets as donations. All the money normally goes to charity. When booking a Dragon dance troupe make sure you know where your money is going. Most of the troupes would be already booked through the New Year but, who knows, maybe you'll get lucky! You may also see Lion dances at weddings and other Chinese holidays.
