Over the past weekend we were invited to check out Clockenflap, Hong Kong's biggest and best outdoor music festival. We typically don't cover music events at HKELD but this year Clockenflap turned it up a notch and included theatre, music, visual art and performance art in their coverage. Freespace Fest in Fotos!24-11-14

Freespace Fest took place over the weekend at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Approximately 40,000 people attended. It was a great event for families and kids who were able to participate in art projects and performances that were accessible and free. It was also nice to see many mediums on display: circus, puppetry, modern dance, music and physical theatre. We hope to see Freespace Fest back next year!

Review-Ravens, We Shall Load Bullets-New Vision Arts Festival15-11-14

There is probably no better time for Hong Kong audiences to watch this Japanese production about suppression and rebellion, about order and violence and about generational struggles. The 30 seniors-turned-artists from Yukio Ninagawa’s Saitama Gold Theatre and the 24 young cast members from his Saitama Next Theatre were seamlessly complemented by the impressive set design (by Tsukasa Nakagoshi), sound design (by Shuichi Tomobe) and lighting (by Takahiro Fujita). They wove together a magical, memorable night at the theatre.

Review-Lost and Found-HKPFF2-11-14

A slow, spacious elevator carried me to the 7th floor of Wah Mow Factory Building. In the small but maze-like Unlock Dancing Plaza (UDP) U-Studio (there are layers of black and white drapery), I took my shoes off and sat in their comfortable floor chairs, (there were also around 15 chairs in the second row). Within the 60 minute performance, we laughed and sighed a little bit as the 5 performers slipped into different costumes and identities.

“An epic metaphysical journey” is the description offered in the program’s synopsis. Considering some of the several dictionary definitions of metaphysical, the adjective is applicable on many levels.
