Artist of the Month-July-Elton Ko

Elton Ko is a local musician and a member of a reggae band called Sensi Lion and a blues combo called Coal Mine Book House. We met him and thought it was about time we featured a local musician in our AoM series. We are always looking for different kinds of artists to feature on the site. Know of someone doing something unique in HK? Contact us and explain why they're awesome! Find out more about Elton and the local music scene, below. His answers are short and sweet - but they say that simplicity is the sign of perfection.

1. Name, Birthplace, Age
Elton, HK, 39

2. How does where you were raised affect your work?
I am glad I grew up in an Asian city with a mixed culture background. The local music I came across all these years has helped in shaping my sound and musical interest.

3. Where did you train?
Self taught mainly. I went to jazz classes with local musos in my early years.

4. What is your favorite style of music? Why?
Blues, R&B, 60’s British rock, Jazz, Reggae, Soul....It is about the sonic resonance in me when I hear that kind of music.

5. What was the best show you EVER saw?
Jeff Beck at the Palais Theatre.

6. What was the best show in HK you EVER saw? (You cannot say your own.)
Chochukmo at Freespace Fest.

7.What piece of work are you the most proud of?
I don't like any piece more than the other.

8. What is your process like?
It’s like capturing the voice in my head.

9. What is your dream project?
Touring on an open deck bus tram around HK.

10. If you could change one thing about the art scene in HK, what would it be?
I'd love to create an Art Precinct solely dedicated to local artists. Isn't that what the Government has been planning since 2000?
